Coalescent Mobile Robotics Announces Strategic Partnership with StrongPoint

Coalescent Mobile Robotics, a Danish-based pioneer of in-store autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) for the retail industry, is delighted to announce the formalization of its value-added reseller agreement with StrongPoint, a leading provider of technology solutions for the grocery retail industry. The partnership will enable Coalescent Mobile Robotics to leverage StrongPoint’s extensive network and expertise in Europe to bring its innovative AMRs to more grocery retailers across the continent.

Coalescent Mobile Robotics’ AMRs are designed to work seamlessly in-store amongst customers and staff. Coalescent Mobile Robotics in Collaboration with Bilka, Salling Group

Coalescent Mobile Robotics to deploy a fleet of 10 mobile robots in Bilka Odense to assist the floor staff.

10 human-friendly, strong and easily accessible mobile robots will help the employees of BILKA Odense with the physically heavy and time-consuming tasks. This is the result of a fruitful partnership between startup Coalescent Mobile Robotics and BILKA. The collaboration marks the beginning of a new technological era for the retail industry.

BILKA and Coalescent Mobile Robotics (CMR) announce on 30 March 2022 their partnership to deploy a fleet of 10 mobile robots in BILKA Odense’s ToGo (Click & Collect). This is an innovative pilot project where robots will assist and work with retail staff for the first time.

On average, about 40% of the time on the ToGo process is spent performing the same arduous and physically demanding tasks as pulling and pushing heavy trolleys. The robot will help by transporting the trolleys from the warehouse to the store and vice versa.

Mark Nielsen, CEO of BILKA:

– The process is streamlined, employees are freed from heavy tasks, the working environment is improved and time is freed to improve our customer service. We see great potential in the robots, which in the future could be included in all BILKA supermarkets and which could perhaps be used for more tasks, possibly for replenishment.

The robot has been named Serena, after tennis star Serena Williams, because according to Clionadh Martin, CEO of CMR, she is strong, influential and not afraid to challenge the status quo. In close and constructive cooperation with BILKA, CMR has developed a sociable, human-friendly and above all, safe and strong robot adapted to the conditions and needs of the supermarket.

– Serena is designed to be approachable and is unique in its easily accessible non-industrial design. Many people are afraid of robots, but we want to demystify that and show that they can be great partners. It is important to make robots affordable and to make them useful in a fun and healthy way.

After a year and a half of cooperation, the robots are now ready to optimise the processes in the BILKA ToGo service. This comes at a time when BILKA ToGo orders have increased from 20 to 400-500 daily orders as a result of the pandemic and when there is a shortage of labour. The robots will bring about multiple benefits to Denmark’s only hypermarket.

With the ongoing pilot programme, CMR plans to install more robots in stores in Denmark, in addition to expanding to other European countries. Coalescent Mobile Robotics is a company developing mobile robots for the retail industry. It

Odense, Denmark. The company has secured its first investment, consisting of DKK 11M
(EUR 1.5M) which will help scale this already rapidly growing team, and grow the company
to be ready to expand internationally.

The company is a member of Denmark’s national robot and drone cluster, Odense Robotics,
in one of the world’s leading robotics cities. Being part of this ecosystem, where companies
collaborate more than they compete, Coalescent has been able to grow to 12 employees,
with more currently being recruited. This pay-it-forward mindset and the close-knit
community has allowed the company to bring two of the world’s leading robotics brains,
Niels Jul Jacobsen and Enrico Krog Iverson, who both joined the board of directors together

How Will Our Robot, Serena, Bolster the Click & Collect Process?

Introduction

The history of e-commerce traces back to the 1960’s and is now embedded in people’s daily lives. A type of hybrid e-commerce model, Click & Collect, allows customers to purchase products online and then pick them up in-store or at a centralized collection point. This model has been proliferating and becoming popular especially in supermarkets and hypermarkets. Our robot, Serena, will be a part of and bolster this process.

Challenges

Through our research and collaboration with hypermarkets, we have discovered that 40% of staff in retail spend their time walking and frequently pushing and pulling heavy loads. The walking distance between the warehouse and the store could be 500± meters. The floor staff walks an average of 20.000 steps per shift. Each trip in Click & Collect takes roughly 45 minutes with an average of 9 trips per day per person. The majority of employees working with Click & Collect are petite women, as they are preferred when having to pick products (fruits, vegetables, etc.) of better quality and they tend to push and pull burdensome loads of 120± kg. Additionally, an ongoing labor shortage is noticeable as it is a physically demanding job.

Current Workflow

The current workflow of Click & Collect can be categorized into five phases, “Reception of Order”, “Preparation of Trolley”, “Fulfilment of Order”, “Storage of Order”, and “Delivery of Order”.

In short, Click & Collect employees collect the orders, prepare the trolleys with empty boxes, pick up the items, then carry them back to the storage area.

How We Help

Our robots automate the transportation of these trolleys – they will bring about advantages without having to redefine the store infrastructure or workflow, saving 5+ minutes per trip with some stores averaging 1500 trips per week. This also means an increase in working standards and more time spent on assisting customers or addressing different tasks.

Our robots will steer the way to making the stores better for employees and customers.

How Will Our Robot, Serena, Boost the Restocking Process?

Introduction

For retailers, inventory restocking is vital for a successful operation. It leads to optimization, brings about increased profits, reduction in costs, and allows them to gain trust from satisfied customers, consistently meeting customer demands.

Current Workflow

When it comes to stock delivery, there are two main methods being used. One being that bulk stock is loaded onto roll cages from the manufacturing factories onto the vehicles and then dropped off at the storage warehouses with the roll cages. The other method is products being dropped off on pallets and kept in the storage area and when required, the products are distributed onto the trolleys. Then the trolleys are pushed to the aisles that need restocking. We will be focusing on the latter method.

Challenges

Taking an average of 6 trolleys to empty one pallet load of products, about 15 minutes are spent in transit for each pallet load. Our research shows that a hypermarket can have around 500 pallets to restock per week.

Employees performing in this area tend to walk from the warehouse to the store multiple times a day. It being the case that they cannot know the exact number of products that requires restocking, they take an insufficient amount of products numerous times, which forces them to go back and forth to the warehouse with the trolleys until the shelves are completely restocked. This happens during after hours and with time being of the essence, employees do not have much time allocated for breaks, signifying that the work becomes physically and mentally exhausting.

How We Help

Our robots will automate the transportation of these trolleys to assist the employees, which will result in a reduction of costs and time as much as 6,500 hours per year. Furthermore, by taking over the pushing and pulling of the heavy loads our robots will decrease risk of injuries and stress at work.

Our fleet of robots will optimize the maintenance of healthy inventory levels and working environment for the employees.

A Message from the CEO & Founder

- Dawon park, Clionadh Martin -

Q. Can you give us a little introduction (where you are from, what you studied, career, etc.) about yourself?

I started off studying Mechanical Engineering. After I graduated, I worked as validations engineer for 1.5 years and through this work I did a course in PLC programming, which opened my world to programming. I’m a traveler at heart, so after this work I went solo travelling for 2 years, always with the intention of coming back and continuing my studies in robotics. In 2012 I graduated from a European master’s in advanced Robotics – EMARO. Since then, I have been working in the mobile robotics industry. In 2016 I moved to Odense to work for a company, again focused on mobile robots, and 2018 is when I started my own company Coalescent Mobile Robotics ApS.

Q. What are your roles at work?

At work I pretty much do everything. Since I started, I’ve had 3 months learning cycles, from developing software, integrating hardware components to learning all about business development, how to get funding to keep the company going and getting a team together that works as a team and on the same goal. It a roller coaster journey – constantly solving new problems.

Q. What motivates you / when do you feel most rewarded?

My motivation changes all the time, because the requirement behind building a company continually changes depending on what stage you are at. I love meeting new people and finding solutions to new problems. But one of the biggest motivators is having gotten this far in developing this technology and working with great partners and people, to keep this journey going. The retail world is also much more exciting than I could have ever imagined.

Q. What is your perspective on robots and why retail robots?

I’ve been working with mobile robots for over 9 years, so starting a company was always going to be based on mobile robots. Focusing on retail came about because a friend of mine used to spend long unsocial hours restocking shelves in supermarkets. She had to push and pull heavy trolleys long distances, all night and she’s not a very big woman. Automating the transportation of goods within retail would not only help people in her situation, but also save on costs for retailers. This market for robots was also new, and so it was exciting to have the possibility of being first movers in it.

Q. What is the vision / mission of your company?

The main vision / mission for the company is to build a company where people enjoy coming to work, to develop state of the art technology which will bring a lot of value to a lot of people. We want to work closely with our customers, so that we can build something that is useful for them, and that they look forward to integrating into their processes and systems.

Q. How did you make the decision to found a company?

I like bringing people together to work on a common goal. Robotics is also very exciting, so why not combine the two of them?

Q. Do you look forward to coming to work each morning?

I love my team. I love the people I interact with every day. I love the unknown, and the willingness of other people to share their knowledge. The technology we are developing is also groundbreaking and super exciting.

Q. Tell us the work environment / CMR in three words!

Collaboration. Inspiring. Fast-moving.

Q. Where do you see your company in five years?

Our robots will be in many different stores, and we will have changed the retail world and people’s perspective on the benefits of robots. Consumers will have more time to enjoy shopping and retail workers more time to help consumers. This will be because our cobots will provide a lot of help in reducing stress and increasing working standards. Everyone will be happier.

Q. Do you think you have a good work-life balance?

I don’t think I am the right person to answer that, my hobby is working, so I work all the time. I enjoy what I do, and so wouldn’t change it. While working is my hobby, I fully embrace work-life balance, and my colleagues at work are free to decide how best to make this balance, themselves.

Q. What is most important to your organization: mission, vision, or values?

Values. People should be respectful of each other’s differences in many ways. People learn differently, communicate differently, have gone through many different things in their life, and so we all need to be mindful of these things. Be honest and direct, so you eliminate miscommunication as much as possible. Don’t be afraid to be wrong, but also to explain yourself based on your perspective. Try and find a middle ground, and if that can’t be done, don’t take things personally. Spend the time to understand how people think, rather than forcing your way on others.

Q. What is the n.1 aspect that you look for as a trait in all your employees when bringing them onto the team?

I think the ability to listen is very important. Your opinion matters, but make sure you give the space to others to also give their point of view.

Q. What is your mindset that you carry while developing your company?

Keep moving and find solutions fast. The world moves quickly and so it requires us to move quickly too.

Q. A word to future employees / customers.

People work for quite a big chunk of their life, so you should aim at doing something that you enjoy, and this is the environment we hope to foster. I think the same goes for integrating new technology into your company, it needs to be enjoyable and useful, and this is one through honest and transparent partnerships.
